Grandfather Oak Becomes a Liberty Tree

Across the United States, Liberty Trees have been designated since before the American Revolution. On November 14 at 10:30 AM, the Trout Lake Nature Center will join that tradition by designating its Grandfather Oak as a Liberty Tree.

The tradition began in 1765, when colonists in Boston gathered beneath a great elm to protest the Stamp Act. Adorned with effigies and banners, the tree became a rallying point against unjust rule, and communities throughout the thirteen colonies soon named Liberty Trees of their own as sites for speeches, petitions, and public debate. These gatherings were democracy in its earliest form: ordinary citizens meeting in the open air to speak freely, be heard, and share in governing themselves. British troops cut down the original Boston elm in 1775, but the tradition lived on as an enduring symbol of liberty, self-government, and the strength of people acting together.

The Trout Lake Nature Center itself grew from the vision of everyday people who wanted to preserve a piece of natural Florida in Lake County. Forward thinking residents and visitors joined forces to purchase land along the shores of Trout Lake, and the City of Eustis later added more land through a conservation easement. The first parcel was secured in 1988, marking the beginning of the Nature Center.

The Grandfather Oak, approximately 286 years old, has witnessed the founding and growth of our nation, Florida’s statehood, and the development of Lake County. Today it spans 124 feet in width, stands more than 94 feet tall, and has a trunk 52 inches in diameter. Generations of children have learned beneath its branches, couples have exchanged vows in its shade, and families have enjoyed picnics under its canopy. Its rugged bark, sweeping limbs, and lush green leaves form a living mini-ecosystem that provides shelter and food for local wildlife and insects.

Join us in celebrating this magnificent oak, our American heritage, and the power of individuals working together.
