The Trout Lake Nature Center is seeking motivated people to volunteer for making habitat improvements, teaching about the environment, and greeting visitors. Whether it’s building nest boxes, working in the pollinator garden, removing invasive plants, teaching students or staffing exhibits at community events, our volunteers are committed to protecting and preserving the Trout Lake Nature Center and watching us improve year by year.
Entering its 36th year of operations in 2024, the Trout Lake Nature Center depends on its volunteers to make things happen. Operating with a small staff and our volunteers, the Trout Lake Nature Center provides educational opportunities to schools, homeschoolers, adults, families and the community throughout the year.
A Volunteer Open House will be held on Sunday, November 5 from 1 to 3 PM for current and prospective volunteers. Learn about our volunteer opportunities with daytime and weekend options and upcoming activities. Then, chat with some of our dedicated volunteers to get the real “scoop” on volunteering. Entry fees to the property are waived for this event so you can also check out our museum, trails, and exhibits while you learn about volunteering to make a difference.

Nature has inspired many artists through the centuries and now is no different. As you walk through the woods, cross a meadow or watch a butterfly flutter, you can be inspired. In the coming months, the Trout Lake Nature Center will be offering ways to be inspired and then express yourself creatively.
Watercolor artist Ellen Westerholm will teach a series of four watercolor lessons. Westerholm provides the paint, brushes and paper along with instruction to create stunning paintings. Westerholm has taught painting for many years with great success and loves to share her passion for painting and creating with others

The entries for our annual Fairy House competition will also be on display and judged at this event - this is your chance to vote for the winner! Come to the presentation to find out the secret. Bring a small calculator and writing instrument with you to help complete a chart that gets to the answer.

Folk Music Third Saturdays Concert. $7 at the door. The potluck will begin at 7 PM with music at 7:45. Bring a covered dish for the potluck.
It's your chance to get the three Projects---WET, WILD and PLT---Climate Change activity in one workshop. Evidence of climate change is occurring all over the globe. Although a natural process, why and how is climate change different? How will affect all of us and what can we do? The projects give you activities and lessons to allow you to teach about climate change using water, wildlife and forest as integrating context. Registration is limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Night can be a special time in the woods as the light fades and owls call to each other. At a special after-hours event, you will walk to our dock to watch the sun set, then take a gentle hike on our trails back to a campfire and music. You may bring your beverage of choice and any food you prefer. Don't forget a lawn chair or a musical instrument if you play and be prepared to take part in a special time at TLNC. All activity takes place outdoors. No registration required but

Bring your well-mannered dog and join the TLNC pack for a quiet walk on our trails where we end up at the Education Dock. This is an opportunity for you to socialize and your dog to socialize. No reservations are required. All dogs must be kept on a 6 foot lead and owners must pick up after their dogs. Entry fee to TLNC is $5/vehicle. All TLNC members (both dogs and humans) have free entry to our facilities.
This committee works on developing, researching, constructing and installing exhibits throughout the property and museum. Are you creative? Then this is the committee for you to get involved in.

Once again TLNC is participating in the Mt. Dora Community Trust's (MDCT) Giving Week. During the week donations made to MDCT in TLNC's name will help TLNC qualify for matching funds. Donations can be made during this week at the MDCT website or by bringing a cash or check (made out to MDCT) to TLNC's office before 10 on Dec. 5th.
