Naturalist Program: The Magic of Lost Springs

Saturday, March 15, 2025

Every three to five years the lost springs of the Ocklawaha River awaken during a months-long drawdown at George Kirkpatrick Dam. During the 2015-2016 drawdown, springs artist Margaret Tolbert and filmmaker Matt Keene traveled to the Ocklawaha to capture the magic of their rebirth, both on canvas and on film.

Experiencing a landscape scarred by government failure, an artist must come to grips with the impending loss of her subject matter: a collection of majestic freshwater springs exposed only for a short time before being smothered and forgotten beneath waters held back by an aging and purposeless dam.

Learn the story of the filming of this documentary by film director Matt Keene.
