Hundreds of years ago, the chiefs of different Native American tribes would tell fantastic stories around the campfire about the stars, constellations, and the origins of the Earth. Mike Ryan will present a PowerPoint presentation retelling many of these different tales.

Mike Ryan is a retired Planetarium Director for Lake County Schools. After spending 42 years teaching in Florida, he has developed more than 30 astronomy-related activities for teachers to use worldwide.

Entry to TLNC is $5/vehicle (free for TLNC members).

Nature has inspired many artists through the centuries and now is no different. As you walk through the woods, cross a meadow or watch a butterfly flutter, you can be inspired. In the coming months, the Trout Lake Nature Center will be offering ways to be inspired and then express yourself creatively.

Watercolor artist Ellen Westerholm will teach a series of four watercolor lessons. Westerholm provides the paint, brushes and paper along with instruction to create stunning paintings. Westerholm has taught painting for many years with great success and loves to share her passion for painting and creating with others.

Painting classes are scheduled throughout the remainder of the year on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Check the event calendar to find when classes are offered and to register. Cost is $50 per class.

Mary Proctor, Dark Skies enthusiasts and advocate will explain how light pollution is affecting natural systems and human communities. He will show the benefits of dark skies and how communities can modify their lighting to reduce light pollution. Each month TLNC invites various scientists, nature lovers, storytellers and environmentalist to speak on a wide variety of topics. Although some topics appeal more to adults, children are always welcome. TLNC does charge a $5/vehicle entry fee to all non-TLNC members.

Come to learn everything your ever wanted to know about living on a lakefront! Topics covered will include water quality, fertilizing, Keep Lake Beautiful, pollinator plants, and shoreline birds. This program is designed for 2 to 5 year olds to have a positive experience in nature when accompanied by an adult. You MUST register to be sure enough supplies are available for all children participating. Dress your child in play clothes and plan for him/her to get dirty. We may be digging in the soil, finding bugs, learning about flowers or hiking in the woods.
