Have you ever asked yourself when is a turtle a tortoise or when is a tortoise a turtle? Get the answer to this question at this presentation about Gopher Tortoises. Tripod is a 3-legged turtle because in the past he became tangled in litter. The litter wrapped around his leg, it became infected and had to be amputated.
Gopher tortoises are a Florida iconic and keystone species with over 365 other species depending on gopher tortoise burrows. TLNC has an ambassador tortoise—Tripod which can be seen in the turtle habitat outside the education building. Learn about the dangers faced by this turtle.

This is the time of year when many “critters” are reproducing and laying eggs. It is not just birds that lay eggs but many of our reptiles, insects, frogs, toads, marine creatures, etc. Learn about what sorts of eggs you might find in your neighborhood or at TLNC.
Learn about the many egg adaptations animals have to make sure their species survive. Then, you can take part in our Egg Hunt Scramble to find the eggs hidden on our trails to collect the letters and unscramble the hidden phrase. This is lots of fun and you might find unexpected natural treasures as you hunt for the eggs.
